5 things to do after you move into your new house

Moving into a new house is an entire adventure if you ask me and whether we like it or not, it’s quite a stressful period too. All those nerves, anxiety that things can go wrong, fears and of course, a lot of hard work. I know it might sound bad, but it’s not and in the end, you’ll enjoy the experience.

Since we already talked about how to move house without stress, let’s talk today about 5 things that you need to do after you move into your new home. Are you ready? Then read on!

Check all delivered items

Take out your list and inspect everything carefully to make sure they arrived safely and nothing is broken. In case you noticed something broken or missing, notify the removal company immediately and try to see what happened. Locate the boxes with the basic needs objects and put them somewhere safe where you can easily reach them.

You won’t be able to unpack everything immediately, so it’s important that you have at least your basic things close and in reach.

Take care of the house utilities

One of the things you should do when moving into a new house is to take care of the utilities (gas, electricity, water and Internet) first. You might have noticed that among the must-have utilities I mentioned the Internet and I feel like I have to explain why.

You see, nowadays, the Internet is a huge part of our daily lives. It helps us with information, entertainment and to keep in touch with our loved ones. Only the thought of not having an Internet connection in my new home for a while scares me because I work from home, so that’s why I advise you to take care of that in time.

Make sure you check for the latest broadband deals available in your area. Broadband speed determines how fast you can move information from the Internet to the devices in your home. If you don’t pick broadband which is fast enough, you will experience a lot of problems, especially if everyone in the household is on the Internet at the same time.

You also need to know that there are 3 types of broadband available in the UK at the moment.

  • ADSL (standard/non-fibre broadband) – this broadband uses copper telephone wire throughout its entire journey between your house and the telephone exchange and has a max speed of 18Mbps. Usually, this broadband is ok for a small household (max 2 persons).
  • Fibre broadband (superfast broadband) – This broadband had a speed between 30Mbps and 299Mbps. In case you don’t have any gamers in the family than this broadband should be more than enough because it has enough speed for things to run smoothly.
  • Gigabit broadband (ultrafast broadband) – This refers to a broadband connection with a speed greater than 300Mbps.

Even if you pick broadband with good speed, you have to be aware that sometimes speed might vary. the speed you will get depends on many factors like the distance from the nearest cabinet or telephone exchange.

The types of content that we deliver across broadband internet are far richer, more engaging, and more dynamic. Interactive web-based applications, streaming on-demand high-quality videos, live video feeds through platforms like Skype, and course management systems are just some of the technologies enabled by broadband internet access and that is why it’s so important to make the right choice.

Secure your home

One of the things to remember when moving into a new house is that you simply don’t know how secure it is. It’s an unknown neighborhood in a strange city, and you may find it hard to feel safe again unless you are certain that your new property is as secure as it can be.

So change the locks, check if the windows are closing good and childproof your home if you have a small baby. Also, check if the smoke detectors are working accordingly.

Notify family and institutions of your new address

This might not be on your to-do list, but it should, especially when we’re talking about institutions. You wouldn’t want important papers delivered to your old address, right? Thought so and that’s why you need to do this as soon as possible.

Make it your dream home

You’ve dreamt for this place for such a long time and now your dream has finally come true! Enjoy the experience, take the time to unpack everything and put it in the right place. Decorate the house to your liking, accessorize it and then don’t forget to throw a housewarming party.
